International ballet competitions have become a somewhat necessary evil in the ballet world. Brought to popular culture’s attention by movies such as First Position, they are, by all accounts, high impact events. Artistic directors from world-famous ballet companies line the judging panels to the watch ballet’s rising stars train, perform and compete.

Ballet Revolución

The work is “Ballet Revolución”—the company’s namesake. In two halves, the performance is co-choreographed by Cuban choreographer Roclan Gonzalez Chavez together with Australian choreographer Aaron Cash (of Tap Dogs fame).

Claudia Lawson

Claudia Lawson is the ballet and contemporary dance critic for ABC Arts in Australia. She studied classical ballet under Marie Walton-Mahon, obtaining her Royal Academy of Dance Advanced and Solo Seal before competing in the Genée International Ballet Competition. After obtaining degrees in Law and Forensic Science, Claudia worked as a media lawyer for the BBC in the UK, where she co-founded hip hop company Street Sessions. Claudia holds a Master's Degree in Media Practice from the University of Sydney and is an Associate of the Royal Academy of Dance.
